THE DEANS EYE WINDOW LINCOLN
CATHEDRAL

The Dean’s Eye Window sits in the North
Transept gable of Lincoln Cathedral. This 13th century circular
plate tracery window, is the subject of an ongoing £4 million
restoration scheme. The window was surveyed and found not to be
perfectly round, with some distortions having occurred due to various
loads over many years. In addition to this, the front face of the
window had twisted within the gable itself, meaning that the new
window would need to be fixed slightly angled within the existing
gable wall.
We were asked to install the anchor system, which
was specifically designed to hold the new tracery stones. Before
any stones could be positioned, working at ground level, we had
to cross-stitch each stone to allow for the further drilling and
later installation of 2no. 1.8m long Cintec anchors per stone.
The success of the whole project depended on the
precision core drilling and extreme accuracy employed by our skilled
personnel, as each anchor had to cross in the middle of each stone,
with a distance of only 5mm between each anchor. Then, when each
stone took its place in the window, all drilling had to take place
between a gap of 250mm in the closure stones.
2no Cintec anchors defying gravity holding in
place 1 stone approx. 150kgs 120ft in the air, part of the New Deans
Eye Window at Lincoln Cathedral.
